Press Release: Let Bulky Bob take the strain
A new waste collection service has given the council's drive to meet Government recycling targets a boost.
Bulky Bob's will remove large household items like washing machines, televisions and carpets free of charge - although residents are limited to five items per visit.
The scheme will also provide work for the long-term unemployed. Groundwork has teamed up with Bulky Bob's to provide training.
And the social benefits don't stop there, as Bulky Bob's will be selling some of the items collected to low-income families, providing them with a source of cut-price goods.
Cabinet member for the environment and regeneration, Councillor Dave Hibbert, said: "The council's partnership with Bulky Bob's is an excellent example of a service that benefits not only residents but the community as a whole.
"We have been set extremely challenging targets by the Government to increase household recycling rates from the current figure of 13 per cent to 20 per cent, by next year.
"In order to do this, we need to be able to offer residents the opportunity to recycle as much of their waste as possible."
The service will not be able to remove all bulky goods however.
Forbidden items include general building materials, rubble, vehicle parts and garden waste.
